Supporting archaeologists in Ukraine

In the past weeks, many nations have set up schemes which enable their citizens to host people who are seeking refuge from the conflict in Ukraine. CIfA and the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) are collaborating to provide an opportunity for Ukrainian archaeologists seeking refuge to make contact with other archaeologists willing to house or employ them. At this stage we do not know the level of demand, nor that of assistance that will be offered.

The EAA has launched a dedicated web page to assist refugees from Ukraine, www.e-a-a.org/Ukraine, and is collecting details of Ukrainian archaeologists and their families in need. If you are able to house one or more of these colleagues and their families, please get in touch with us using this form providing

  • your name, contact email and phone number
  • information on how many people you could house
  • any additional comments that would help a Ukrainian colleague choose whom to contact
  • your consent that this personal information may be used by CIfA and EAA staff and shared with the list of colleagues compiled by the EAA, and with any employer in the UK able to offer work to sponsored individuals for the purpose outlined on this page

If demand is low we will contact you, so that you may consider helping refugees through other channels. You may wish to do so anyway.

If you might be able to employ a Ukrainian archaeologist, please provide

  • your name, contact email and phone number
  • details of employment opportunities
  • any additional comments that would help a Ukrainian colleague choose whom to contact
  • your consent that this personal information may be used by CIfA and EAA staff and shared with the list of colleagues compiled by the EAA, and with anyone contacting CIfA to act as a potential host for the purpose outlined on this page

CIfA members in the UK should study the provisions of the UK ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme and employers should note that successful sponsorship is a prerequisite of the right to work under this scheme. This suggests that collaboration between employers and hosting individuals will be necessary: we hope that this information sharing opportunity will help.

Please be aware that CIfA and EAA are unable to vet either sponsors or refugees: we can only share information provided to us and we cannot accept any responsibility for the consequences of contact.
