Summary

Thank you for your interest in the post of Ancient Monuments Officer, based at Longmore House in Edinburgh. This is a permanent and pensionable appointment.

We are the lead body for Scotland’s historic environment; a charity dedicated to the advancement of heritage, culture, education and environmental protection. We’re at the forefront of researching and understanding the historic environment, and addressing the impact of climate change on its future. We investigate and record architectural and archaeological sites and landscapes across Scotland and care for more than 300 properties of national importance. We have a People Strategy, which is an overarching strategy to ensure we support and develop staff within the organisation.

Historic Environment Scotland’s Heritage Directorate provides expert support to the Scottish Ministers on the protection, conservation and management of Scotland’s historic buildings, historic landscapes and archaeological sites.

The Planning, Consents & Advisory Service (PCAS) works closely with planning authorities, owners, developers and many other bodies to ensure that where change is necessary, this does not adversely affect these important elements of Scotland’s historic environment. The team’s staff provides statutory and related advice on listed buildings, scheduled monuments, conservation areas and the wider historic environment. Advice within the planning system on planning applications, scheduled monuments, and listed building consent. Your role will primarily revolve around supporting the team's scheduled monument casework.

You will largely work in one of three teams within the Ancient Monuments Team, initially in the Northwest Team, primarily covering Argyll & Bute, Highland, Eilean nan Siar, Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands Council areas, as well as both National Parks, but offering support as required across the whole of Scotland.  The Northwest Team is currently composed of four staff covering and you will support the team in delivering all areas of casework for scheduled monuments, World Heritage Sites and historic battlefields.
