Formed in 2024 through the merger of the four Welsh Archaeological Trusts, Heneb combines over five decades of expertise in archaeology and heritage management. We offer a comprehensive range of archaeological and consultancy services to support development in both the public and private sectors. We collaborate closely with developers, landowners, and communities to ensure compliance with regulations, while safeguarding and documenting Wales’ rich historic environment.

 

Purpose of the Role

To manage and coordinate the delivery of archaeological projects across Heneb’s Field Services, ensuring that work is delivered efficiently, safely, on budget, and to nationally recognised professional standards. The postholder will work with the wider project management team and will be accountable to the Deputy Heads of Archaeology for north and south Wales. They will oversee multiple project teams, coordinate staff and resources, maintain positive client and stakeholder relationships, and support the continued growth of Heneb’s developer led services across Wales.

 

Context

Heneb Field Services is experiencing increased project management demand as its developer led workload grows across Wales. This interim role provides additional management capacity for a 6-month period, with the possibility of extension if there is a continuing organisational need. The post provides an opportunity for an experienced archaeological professional with strong organisational, commercial, and leadership skills to contribute directly to the effective delivery of Heneb’s growing portfolio of archaeological work

 

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery & Coordination

  • Manage the day-to-day delivery of archaeological projects from inception through to completion
  • Ensure projects are delivered to agreed timescales, budgets, quality standards, and client expectations
  • Allocate workloads, monitor progress, and ensure the efficient use of staff, resources, and project capacity
  • Prepare and contribute to tenders, fee proposals, written schemes of investigation, project designs, and programme information
  • Oversee project budgets, track expenditure, and support sound financial performance across the project portfolio
  • Maintain effective project records and ensure work is managed in accordance with Heneb systems and procedures

 

Team Leadership & Resource Management

  • Line manage Project Officers and Archaeologists, supporting career development, training, and performance management
  • Provide day to day leadership, guidance, and support to project teams
  • Support effective workforce planning, workload prioritisation, and deployment of staff across projects
  • Promote collaborative working across Heneb to ensure project delivery is well integrated with the wider archaeology service

 

Quality Assurance, Reporting & Compliance

  • Ensure all work is delivered in accordance with Heneb’s health and safety policy, relevant legislation, and professional standards
  • Maintain high standards of reporting, including reviewing, editing, and contributing to archaeological reports and fieldwork summaries
  • Ensure outputs are technically robust, well presented, and appropriate to client, planning, and regulatory requirements
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in project delivery, quality systems, and working practices

 

Client, Stakeholder & Business Development

  • Provide professional advice to clients, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders regarding project requirements, methodologies, and outcomes
  • Represent Heneb at client meetings, site visits, and professional events as required
  • Support business development activity by contributing to tenders, proposals, client relationships, and the conversion of opportunities into delivered work
  • Encourage and support the dissemination of project results through talks, publications, and public engagement initiatives where appropriate

 

Operational Support

  • Deputise for the deputy hads of archaeology in their absence on operational matters, where required
  • Carry out any other duties reasonably required by the Trust

 

Scope of the Role 

  • An interim project management role supporting the delivery of Heneb’s Field Services workload across Wales
  • Direct responsibility for coordinating project delivery, resources, budgets, and outputs across multiple archaeological projects
  • Line management responsibility for project officers and archaeologists
  • A client facing role with significant internal coordination and external engagement

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications & Professional Standing

  •  Degree or equivalent qualification or practical experience in archaeology or a related discipline.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists or working towards membership.
  • Full, current driving licence

 

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in commercial archaeology, including leading and delivering projects of different types and scales to completion
  • Experience of managing archaeological project delivery from design and costing through to completion
  • Experience of managing or supervising teams, including staff at varying levels
  • Experience in project design, budgeting, financial monitoring, and resource planning
  • Experience of working with clients, contractors, consultants, and other project stakeholders

 

Technical Knowledge & Skills

  • Good understanding of British archaeology and professional standards, including CIfA standards and guidance
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements in archaeological fieldwork
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing to publication standard
  • Excellent IT skills and confidence using digital tools to support project delivery

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

Sector & Specialist Experience

  • Knowledge of archaeology in Wales, relevant legislation, and heritage frameworks
  • Experience of engaging with clients across sectors such as construction, infrastructure, and energy
  • Track record of contributing to publications or public engagement initiatives
  • Postgraduate qualification in archaeology or a related discipline

 

Other Desirables

  • Ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh
  • Publication, research, or public engagement experience

Additional Information

This role requires periodic travel within the region for meetings and site visits, with occasional travel to other parts of Wales.  As visits will often be to active construction sites or sites in rural locations without ready public transport, the postholder will need to be able to drive and to be comfortable walking on uneven terrain.
