The Registered Organisation scheme

CIfA Registered Organisation logo

The Registered Organisation scheme is a unique quality assurance programme. It signifies a commitment to maintaining professional standards and competence.

Archaeological projects are complex. Registered Organisations have demonstrated their ability to carry out work effectively and act ethically while adhering to professional standards. Registered Organisations:

  • have the skills to provide informed and reliable advice
  • have the skills to execute schemes of work appropriate to the circumstances, minimising uncertainty, delay and cost
  • regularly review their practices and procedures to ensure they are working to industry standards as part of the scheme’s peer review process

By using a Registered Organisation you know that your archaeologists are committed to the professional standards required by CIfA and you can be confident they will meet your needs and the needs of the public. If you have concerns about the quality of work being undertaken by a Registered Organisation in relation to the Institute's Code of conduct or regulations, you may raise a professional conduct allegation.

Interested in becoming a Registered Organisation?

The scheme is designed to operate internationally, and organisations operating in Germany may use an alternative branding ‘Gütezeichen für Archäologie / Träger des CIfA-Gütezeichens für Archäologie'.

Interested in joining an inspection panel?

The scheme encourages continuous quality improvement. Therefore, CIfA registration is for a finite period, after which organisations must re-apply. As part of their application organisations undergo rigorous peer review and are subject to an inspection (which includes a site visit for organisations that undertake intrusive works).

Inspection panels are made up of volunteers.
