Heatwave welfare resources for field staff

Wednesday, 24th June 2026

In response to the current period of extreme heat and the associated public health warnings, the Diggers' Forum has developed a set of practical resources highlighting key considerations for protecting archaeological field staff during hot weather.

The resources are based on the latest government guidance and are intended to support discussions around staff welfare, health and safety and heat-related risk management on archaeological projects.

Periods of extreme heat can present significant risks to those working outdoors. Employers and project managers should ensure that appropriate risk assessments are reviewed and that suitable control measures are in place. Depending on the circumstances, these may include amended working hours, increased rest breaks, access to shade and drinking water, task rotation, additional staffing support where required, and appropriate arrangements for individuals who may be particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness.
