Summary

Canterbury Archaeological Trust is seeking to employ a Geoarchaeology Officer / Palaeolithic Specialist. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, project managers and clients on a range of exciting projects, while helping to develop CAT’s technical capabilities. The anticipated expansion of CAT’s geoarchaeological services will offer the successful candidate opportunities for specialist and managerial development.

The role is suitable for someone with a degree or a post-graduate qualification in archaeology, with specialist knowledge of geoarchaeology. Specialist knowledge of the Palaeolithic period is considered essential. They will be expected to have a detailed understanding of a range of geological depositional environments, in particular Pleistocene terrace deposits.

Previous experience of working on geoarchaeological fieldwork projects, including geotechnical borehole surveys is essential, and should include deposit modelling and associated post-excavation analysis and reporting.

 

Key responsibilities

  • To support the Head of Archaeological Services & Project Managers in the design, planning and delivery of geoarchaeological projects, in particular those with Paleolithic components.
  • To act as the principal person on site for specified geoarchaeological projects, taking responsibility for health & safety, welfare, sub-contractor, client & third-party liaison, quality, and project delivery.
  • To undertake and oversee post-excavation tasks associated with specified geoarchaeological projects, up to and including the preparation of final reports, including the assessment of geoarchaeological samples, the production of deposit models and the analysis of Paleolithic deposits.
  • To assist with the mentoring and training of junior members of staff.
  • To help ensure all work is undertaken in accordance with CAT’s policies, procedures and standards.

 

Essential Requirements

  • Understanding of and enthusiasm for commercial archaeology.
  • Degree in archaeology, with specialism in geoarchaeology or a related discipline, specifically knowledge of the Palaeolithic period.
  • Understanding of a range of geological depositional environments, in particular Pleistocene terrace deposits.
  • Experience of working on geoarchaeological fieldwork projects, including geotechnical borehole surveys, including deposit modelling and associated post-excavation analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to carry out prolonged manual work in an outdoor environment in all weather.
  • Availability and willingness to work away from base location.
  • Current UK driving Licence and willingness to drive company vehicles.
  • In-date successful completion of CITB HS&E Managers and Professionals test, SSSTS Site Supervisor Training, and other training as required by the H&S Manager.
  • Attainment of ACIfA or equivalent skills and experience. Commitment to join CIfA with appropriate support from CAT.
  • Good organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate others.
  • Ability to lead a team.
  • Willingness to take responsibility for, mentor and train more junior members of staff.
  • Working knowledge of MSWord and MSExcel.
  • Working knowledge of RockWorks, ArcGIS or similar.
  • Commitment to adhere to all relevant CAT Health and Safety policies and procedures, and lead others in adherence and implementation.

 

Desirable Skills

  • Post-graduate degree in geoarchaeology or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of working in an office environment.
