Join CIfA's International Practice SIG for the first in our new series of tea break talks: International standards in practice

The International Practice SIG invites you to join us for our tea break talk, taking place from 12:30 until 13:30 on Wednesday 14 October 2026.

This is the opening session of a new series of short online talks from the International Practice SIG, and will outline the programme for the year ahead before the talk begins.

This session is titled 'International standards in practice' and looks at the standards and guidance that shape archaeological work across borders, and at what happens when they meet the realities of practice on the ground. It will consider CIfA's own Standards and the supporting universal guidance, which are written to apply wherever CIfA-accredited professionals work, alongside the detailed guidance that is necessarily jurisdiction-specific.

The talk draws on O’Brien, L., Humphreys, R. & Acheson, C. 2025. Ethics and standards in international practice Practice Paper for Chartered Institute for Archaeologists Registration Committee (Organisations) on relevant standards for international cultural heritage projects. Chartered Institute for Archaeologists – The Archaeologist. Issue 124, Winter 2025, and will leave time for questions and discussion.

Speakers: Leonora O'Brien, Heritage Consultant at AtkinsRealis and Ruth Humphreys, Principal Heritage Consultant role at Arup Nottingham

We welcome everyone from the archaeological community to join us, regardless of your prior experience of working internationally or existing knowledge of the topic.
