The Role
The Project Portfolio Manager (PPM) is responsible for managing teams of Project Managers to assist the Fieldwork Delivery Manager in delivering a high quality product, strong financial performance and growth objectives. This will involve line managing and operationally managing Project Managers/Senior Archaeologists (or on occasions Fieldwork Project Officers) and guiding and reporting on the commercial, financial, SHEQ and resourcing aspects of their projects. The PPM will have responsibility for overseeing a selection of frameworks as well as a range of projects including large/complex sites. The makeup of their portfolio will be decided with the Head of Contracting and the Fieldwork Delivery Manager. Projects will be fieldwork focussed but may also include Geophysical Survey and Post-Excavation works. They will also have input into logistics, resourcing and training assisted by relevant company departments. The post holder is expected to drive exemplary levels of quality across fieldwork and post excavation projects.
You must have the following essential criteria:
- An excellent appreciation of industry SHEQ requirements
- Demonstrable experience of project management including a detailed understanding of financial management, program management and quality control including a track record of returning good profitability and receiving excellent client feedback
- An excellent knowledge of UK archaeology including current methods, legislation, techniques and guidance
- A demonstrable portfolio across large and complex project and deliverables, including publication
- Able to effectively collect and interrogate financial information for fieldwork projects and support others in understanding project finances
- Significant experience of negotiating and delivering archaeological fieldwork projects to a range of clients, understanding how to build lasting relationships and meet expectations
- A sound knowledge of the contractual conditions affecting our business and how these affect our submission of tenders and how we undertake project work
- Excellent writing skills and the ability to produce robust and comprehensive written deliverables on behalf of Headland
- Competence in the use of Microsoft office products and the ability to interrogate, analyse and present data
- An excellent listener and communicator with colleagues and clients relating to project work, business goals and the promotion of Headland
- Ability to assist managers in delegating project work to junior members of staff, setting shared objectives and ensuring they are exposed to the right level of work for their capabilities and to meet the requirements of the client
- Ability to resolve conflict in a project team and management structure ensuring Headland’s reputation for delivering excellent service and meeting the client’s expectations
- Track record of mentoring staff either technically (relating to fieldwork) or in project management
- Ability to lead meetings with colleagues and clients and positively influence the discussions
- An awareness of market conditions and ability to produce, input into and review sales across a range of complexities of projects
- Full clean UK driving licence and willingness to drive company vehicles
- Willingness to travel and be responsible for managing projects across the UK
- Degree level education or equivalent in a relevant subject

Your contractual place of work will be one of our offices located in Edinburgh, Cleckheaton, Silsoe or Hereford. You will be expected to report to the office in person when required for inductions /training/ meetings/ briefings etc. and be prepared to travel and stay away for site visits, meetings, training and events.
