Project Managing Major Infrastructure Schemes

Price: £40 CIfA members, £50 non-members

Venue: The Visitors Centre, London Archaeological Archive & Research Centre

Description

Focussing on the use of both soft skills and technology, and drawing heavily on shared experiences collectively managing a major fieldwork and post-excavation programme (consultant/employers technical repsentative and contractor), the event will explore the challenges and pitfalls of managing major infrastructure projects, with a view to stimulating a workshop discussion focussing on tips and tricks.

Projects of this scale demand innovation in approach, design and implementation if a successful outcome is to be achieved. This is particularly relevant where circumstances demand that an entire project has to be costed and programmed with little or no preliminary understanding of risk, and it is therefore vital that the consultant and contractor enter into the project in a spirit of co-operation and most importantly trust.

With regard to technology, particular attention will be given to the subjective approach to measuring both task and project progress, and a reporting system designed to calculate both value of work and progress achieved against a baseline programme of works, to the satisfaction of both client and contractor. Measures could include milestone, spend profile, critical path, task completion and programme float analysis, all in relation to the baseline programme of works early and late start envelope. We will talk about communication and how projects can fail if this important ‘soft’ skill is not recognised and ignored.
