Oxford Archaeology is one of the largest independent archaeological practices in Europe. Since our foundation in 1973, we have worked throughout the UK and on many international projects. We have offices in Oxford, Cambridge and Lancaster. We are a registered Educational Charity.
Due to a strong fieldwork programme, we are looking to recruit keen and enthusiastic Field Project Supervisors to become part of our team. You would be based from our Cambridge office, however our work could take you anywhere in the country; currently we are deploying staff to sites in Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Essex, Norfolk, and Suffolk. The ability to work away from home for long periods is essential. Upcoming projects in the region include evaluations on major linear schemes, and large-scale excavations of Iron Age to Romano-British settlements, Bronze Age funerary monuments and medieval roadside settlement.
Position requirements:
- The role will mainly be field based, but some time may/will also be spent in the office.
- Candidates should possess substantial experience in professional archaeological fieldwork within the UK or Irish commercial sectors, along with a strong comprehension of the archaeological context of these regions.
- Candidates will have on-site responsibility for watching briefs, evaluations and small to medium excavations on a range of both home and away-based projects, reporting to a Project Manager. Candidates may also run areas of larger excavations, reporting to a Project Officer.
- You will have a good understanding of the Health and Safety legislation relevant to the commercial environment, as well the needs and priorities of commercial clients.
- Candidates should have report writing experience and will produce unpublished reports for their sites.
- Strong communication skills and a commitment to community engagement.
- Candidates will be able to supervise and assist with performance monitoring and training where appropriate, for Assistant Supervisors, Field Archaeologists and Graduate Trainees.
