CIfA, CBA, and ALGAO:England respond to Government consultation on technical planning changes

CIfA today submitted a response to the Government's technical consultation on planning changes. The response was made jointly on behalf of the Institute, the Council for British Archaeology (CBA) and the Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers England (ALGAO:England). The response is part of a sustained engagement by CIfA over proposed changes to the planning system which the Government are bringing forward through its major new Housing and Planning Bill, and changes to the National Planning Policy Framework. CIfA, together with CBA and ALGAO:England, continue to raise significant concerns about the planning provisions in the Bill, in particular the proposals relating to Permission in Principle (which it is proposed will be automatically granted to sites identified for housing in local and neighbourhood plans and on brownfield registers). The effect of such proposals on the assessment and evaluation of archaeological remains has not yet been fully addressed by Government although efforts continue to ensure that these concerns are reflected in amendments to the Bill.
