Summary

SLR’s Archaeology & Heritage team operates across European from our UK offices in Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Exeter, London, Nottingham and Shrewsbury. We advise our clients on a wide range of projects, across multiple sectors and throughout the planning process. Key services include: feasibility and design input, baseline analyses, formulation and undertaking of desk-based and field-based investigation and mitigation strategies, and discharge of planning conditions. From small-scale proposals for home-owners to large-scale multi-disciplinary EIA projects on behalf of both private- and public-sector clients, we pride ourselves on delivering successful projects and adding value for our clients.

We are currently seeking a high-calibre candidate to join our expanding Archaeology and Heritage team, with a focus on the South-West of England and South Wales. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to undertake a range of exciting projects, as well as the opportunity to have a major role in developing our SW regional presence and client base.

Ideally based within our Bristol office, the role will involve working closely with the other disciplines within our West/South West regional offices (Bradford on Avon, Exeter, Worcester and Cardiff), taking on new commissions, and delivering for new and existing clients.

Person Specification

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:

  • Proven capabilities in a comparable role at a comparable organisation, including technical delivery, financial and client management and business development
  • A relevant degree-level (or higher) heritage-based qualification, or a demonstrably equivalent level of experience and/or accreditation
  • A thorough knowledge of the UK planning system in respect of heritage, including current and emerging heritage legislation, planning policy and guidance
  • A track record of successful project delivery across diverse market sectors, including energy, renewables, housebuilding, minerals, infrastructure and regeneration
  • Experience designing and managing a range of desk- and field-based investigations
  • The ability to communicate well with colleagues, client s and consultees, to relay complex information in an authoritative, intelligible and effective way

Key Responsibilities       

The successful candidate will have a fantastic opportunity to develop and grow the team’s presence within the West/South West region from both a technical and commercial perspective.  As well as leading on delivery of a portfolio of existing projects, they will have the opportunity to help shape the future growth of the team and wider business within the region.

Main duties and responsibilities would be as follows:

  • Managing / undertaking a wide range of historic environment projects
  • Preparing fee proposals, setting budgets and maintaining project finance
  • Providing informed, expert advice to clients and colleagues in relation to potential heritage constraints and opportunities, as well as feeding into concept/design proposals
  • Negotiating effective methodologies and proportionate scopes of desk-based and field-based work with clients and regulatory authorities
  • Preparing authoritative and robust heritage documents in support of planning applications, including DBAs and ES chapters, to a high standard
  • Designing and managing programmes of archaeological field investigation / mitigation
  • Undertaking business planning and marketing of SLR’s heritage services
  • Actively developing opportunities with new and existing clients in the W/SW region, and working with other disciplines to maximise multi-disciplinary opportunities
