Summary

This is a rare opportunity to join the Archaeology Planning Team at the County Council in a senior role in the management, protection and promotion of Cambridgeshire’s wide and varied archaeological resource. Cambridgeshire is one of the busiest areas in the country for archaeological fieldwork and development, and the team operates a semi-commercial service supporting local planning authorities in the delivery of these challenges whilst at the same time protecting our rich and varied historic environment.

As Senior Archaeologist, you will be taking the lead on major and strategic developments, working with developers, consultants, contractors and planning authorities to manage the impacts of proposals on the historic environment. This will include proposing and negotiating the scope of evaluations and excavations undertaken in mitigation of development impacts, monitoring fieldwork and post excavation programmes to ensure the delivery of all benefits that archaeology can bring to the county and our residents, and furthering knowledge understanding and appreciation of Cambridgeshire’s Historic Environment.

Working in a team of Historic Environment archaeologists within a combined Natural and Historic Environment Service, the postholder will bring their expertise to our partnership working, supervise and develop less experienced colleagues and represent Cambridgeshire’s archaeological interests at appropriate levels.

We are looking for experienced individuals with an in depth understanding and experience of British archaeology and its role in the planning system. You must have experience in handling large, complex and varied caseloads, and be a confident communicator. You must have a good level of computer literacy, ideally with knowledge and experience of GIS and databases. This post is a Senior Level post that would appeal to someone wanting to grow their career as a planning archaeologist.
