A great opportunity to join Suffolk County Council's Archaeological Service as a Senior Archaeological Officer. You will contribute to the management and championing of the rich archaeological heritage of Suffolk – a county of countryside, coast, historic buildings and ancient settlements.

Your role and responsibilities

Your primary responsibility will be to provide professional advice into the planning process. You will be working to protect and promote the understanding and conservation of archaeological heritage, whilst supporting sustainable development. Suffolk will see delivery of a number of large-scale developments and Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, and you will be responsible for providing advice on large schemes. This is an opportunity to influence and shape projects that contribute to archaeological research agendas.

Your work will bring you into contact with a wide range of customers and organisations, from developers, planning authorities, national agencies, consultants, archaeological contractors and parish councils. You will be a good communicator and negotiator, able to share your knowledge and build working relationships to achieve positive outcomes for archaeology, with the drive and enthusiasm to manage a busy workload.

You will

* be an experienced archaeological professional, with a degree or equivalent relevant experience

* also have a good knowledge of British archaeology, an excellent understanding of fieldwork techniques and a good knowledge of how archaeology is managed in the planning system.

Suffolk County Council’s Archaeological Service is part of the Natural and Historic Environment Team. We maintain the Historic Environment Record, provide archive services, deliver outreach to the public, and support the county’s planning authorities with development management casework and policy advice.
