Due to very busy field work programmes extending through spring/summer and beyond we are looking to recruit keen and enthusiastic Field Archaeologists and Assistant Supervisors to become part of our team. Based in either our Oxford, Cambridge or Lancaster office, our work could take you anywhere in the country; currently we are deploying staff to sites across a wide geographical area and have a project on the east coast which we expect to run for all of this year where 7-day accommodation can be made available.

Assistant Supervisor Position:

  • Competitive salary range £23,638 to £24,342 in line with CIfA salary guidelines; appointments will be made based on demonstrated ability, experience and CIfA membership if appropriate.
  • Candidates must demonstrate experience, technical proficiency, and good working knowledge of professional archaeological fieldwork within the UK or Irish commercial environment.

Successful candidates for Assistant Supervisor positions will join our Assistant Supervisor training programme (the final part of our Graduate Trainee to Supervisor Career Pathway). Training includes office-based internal training sessions covering Health and Safety, site survey, post-excavation, finds recognition and training and mentoring of others. You will also be given on-site training in task delegation and supervision, watching briefs, machine watching and record checking. You will also be able to undertake external training courses including plant supervision (NPORS), CAT and Genny, First Aid at Work and Site Supervisors Safety Training (SSSTS). When the required levels of competency are achieved you may apply for promotion to Supervisor grade, as vacancies arise.

Archaeologist Position:

  • Competitive salary £23,239 in line with CIfA salary guidelines; appointments will be made on the basis of demonstrated ability, previous experience and CIfA membership if appropriate.
  • Candidates will have 6 months experience of professional archaeological fieldwork within the UK or Irish commercial environment. Documented evidence of competence, in the form of a completed training log from our Graduate Trainee programme or the Archaeology Skills Passport scheme will be advantageous.

Successful candidates for Archaeologist positions will join our Archaeologist to Assistant Supervisor training programme (the second part of our Graduate Trainee to Supervisor Career Pathway) which provides a clear path for career development and encourages you to record your progress through site and reading logs, as you learn new skills. The programme includes off-site training sessions lead by OA specialists and senior managers, and with content including the understanding of formation processes, matrix generation, burials archaeology, environmental archaeology, Health and Safety, the exciting range of OA apps – including our digital recording system - and much more. When the required levels of competency are achieved, you will advance to Assistant Supervisor level.

Both Positions:

  • A degree in archaeology or related discipline will be highly advantageous, as will membership of the CIfA at PCIfA level.
  • A full clean driving licence is desirable, and a current CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card is essential.
