Virtual Training: Encouraging a speak up culture in your workplace: effective whistleblowing arrangements for organisations

 

 

Description
Whistleblowing is the act of disclosing information about wrongdoing in the workplace. This could mean highlighting possible unlawful activities in the organisation, failures to comply with legal obligations, miscarriages of justice or reporting on risks to the health and safety of individuals or to the environment.

Often issues can be dealt with early on if organisations have effective whistleblowing arrangements and encourage staff to raise any concern they may have about risk, malpractice or wrongdoing as early as possible. A responsible attitude to whistleblowing helps you to promote a healthy workplace culture built on openness and accountability.

Protect (the whistleblowing charity) will be running a bespoke virtual training session on 2 February from 10:00am - 1:30pm aimed at upskilling senior managers within archaeological organisations in handling whistleblowers effectively.

The training session will be run and facilitated by two senior members of the Protect Legal team and will include:

• Interactive sessions with delegate voting/polls
• Group exercises based on issues relevant to archaeology
• Opportunities to ask questions about best practice and personal challenges

The session will also cover:

• An introduction to whistleblowing and Protect
• Encouraging a speak up culture and the first steps when someone raises a concern
• Clarity around whether a matter is best treated as whistleblowing or a grievance
• Gathering information and providing assurances

Featured presenters

• Elizabeth Gardiner, Chief Executive, Protect
  Elizabeth is an employment solicitor and has a background in public policy and Parliamentary work.  Elizabeth joined the charity in 2018 providing advice to whistleblowers calling Protect's free Advice Line, and training employers on best practice whistleblowing.  She became Interim Director of Legal and Policy in 2018 and was Interim CEO in December 2019 before being  appointed to the post permanently in March 2020.
• Sybille Raphael, Legal Director, Protect
  An experienced employment solicitor, Sybille managed an award winning legal advice service at the charity Working Families, specialising in equality law and family rights.  Sybille joined Protect in December 2020 and as senior solicitor she supervises the work of the Advice team and develops the charity's plans to reform whistleblowing law.
