From Field to Museum: Training workshop on artefact identification and accessioning process

Registration is closed for this event
This workshop will go back to basics by providing an introduction on recognising artefacts and what to do with them – from that initial identification and first aid for fragile items, to off-site processing in preparation for accessioning.

Partnership training workshop delivered by National Museum of Scotland and Chartered Institute for Archaeologists

Encountering finds is commonplace for an archaeologist working in the field and the ability to correctly identify an artefact can greatly impact on progress with fieldwork. However training in this important aspect of field archaeology is often delivered ad-hoc, as and when artefacts are encountered which can potentially lead to important nuances being missed if there has been a training gap.

Delivered by the National Museum of Scotland Post-excavation officer, this workshop will go back to basics by providing an introduction on recognising artefacts and what to do with them – from that initial identification and first aid for fragile items, to off-site processing in preparation for accessioning. The workshop will include looking at different types of material (such as stone, shale, slag and non-ferrous metalworking) and will also include a tour of the museum stores to learn about the accessioning process.

This workshop is aimed at early career archaeologists or those who wish to refresh or formalise their training in finds recognition and processing.
