A new set of threads: the production and design of Into the Wildwoods and The First Foresters
Matt Ritchie, Archaeologist, Forestry and Land Scotland

Description
This session includes a brief presentation on the development and production of Into the Wildwoods (2020) and The First Foresters (2019), followed by an open Q&A. The innovative booklets pioneer a ‘deep time’ approach to woodland heritage, and explore the presentation and interpretation of some quite complex and unconventional archaeological ideas. The booklets take a carefully tailored approach to archaeological discussion, creative indoor activities and practical outdoor learning, using the threads of archaeological methodology, today’s native woodlands and the ancient wildwood to explore the lives of Mesolithic wild harvesters who first ventured in and Neolithic pioneers who followed long after. As both reference material and learning resource, the booklets are aimed at teachers, youth group leaders, archaeological educators and anyone interested in our native woodlands. They use a popular communication style and bold design to align an unabashed archaeological and ecological ethos with a more subtle message of stewardship and responsibility. They are intended to share and shape values across a wide readership, while preparing the practitioner with information and ideas for their learners. There will be space for discussion to cover any key issues or questions in more detail.
