Selection Toolkit for Archaeological Archives Workshop - London

Description

The workshops will begin by presenting the Selection Strategy Toolkit project rationale and the importance of preparing a suitable selection strategy at the outset of an archaeological project. The workshops will then introduce the Selection Toolkit and its resources to participants. Participants will then carry out a practical exercise using the toolkit to develop a selection strategy for two different archaeology projects. This activity will encourage participants to think critically and strategically about how to create a selection strategy, the workflow they should follow, the additional guidance or documentation they may need to consult, and the people they will need to collaborate with as part of selection strategy creation process. Following this exercise participants will be asked to present the selection strategies they have developed and justify the reasoning behind their choices. Guided by the session leaders, participants will have the opportunity to access strengths and weaknesses of the strategies they have developed and compare their selection strategise to the real life examples from the case studies. The workshop will conclude with participants thinking about the steps they would need to take to better integrate selections strategies within their own workflows and how they might best achieve this. Participants will also be provided with a set of advocacy tools to help aid them take the learning objectives of the workshop back to their own organisations.

An introduction to the online tools that have been developed for the toolkit.
11:15   Selection Strategy Exercise: Planning for the selection
During this exercise participants will divided into groups and asked to use the resources in the Selection Toolkit to develop a suitable selection strategy for a specific archaeological project. Participants will be required to think strategically about how to create a selection strategy, the workflow they should follow, the additional guidance or documentation they may need to consult, and the people they will need to collaborate as part of selection strategy creation process.

A continuation of the Selection Strategy Exercise. This part of the exercise will focus on how to follow the selection strategy you have created and what to do when circumstances change.

Participants will be asked to present the selection strategies they have developed and justify the reasoning behind their choices. Guided by the session leaders, participants will have the opportunity to access the strengths and weaknesses of the strategies they have developed.

Participants will be asked to think about what steps they would need to take and realistic targets to work towards to better integrate selection strategies within their own workflows. Participants will also be provided with a set of advocacy tools to help aid participants take the key learning objectives of the workshop back to their own organisations.

Note regarding the reserves list
Places on the workshops are limited and therefore registration for a ‘reserve list’ has been opened for each workshop. In order to facilitate a balanced discussion between all areas of the sector, potential workshop attendees will be targeted based on the workshop’s location and registration with the 'reserve list'. Invitations to attend each workshop will be sent out roughly 6 weeks prior to each workshop. ​​​​​​​
