Working Practices

Archaeologist

The archaeological profession provides more than 5000 jobs and contributes over £100m to the UK economy every year. It is a diverse discipline employing specialists in many fields. In a profession that works for both the public and the private sector, there is a great need for a strong, authoritative body to ensure effective self-regulation. This role is fulfilled by the IfA, the profession's institute. It has members from all areas of archaeology - and all of them are bound by by-laws codifying professional ethics. In the fast developing environment that characterises archaeology today, there are always areas where practice can be improved. Over the coming years the Institute will continue to set and review standards for archaeology. It will strengthen its relationship with other professions in the heritage sector and beyond, to ensure that both client and the public receive best-value archaeological services.

The committee for working practices in archaeology (CWPA) is at the sharp end in attempting to change working practices in archaeology and the historic environment for the better. The committee is the first port of call for new standard and guidance documents and for good practice guides covering a wide range of subjects. CWPA is also involved in developing model contracts, in monitoring health and safety issues (including the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and in the long running issue of pay and conditions. The committee membership represents a wide range of archaeological interests and includes curators, contractors, consultants and specialists. CWPA works closely with all the IfA committees but particularly the Professional Training and RO committees in ensuring that best practice in all aspects of archaeology is developed and promoted effectively.

Amendments to Standards and guidance

The Committee for Working Practices in Archaeology (CWPA) has been considering whether the IfA Standards and guidance need revision. Overall, the S&gs stand the test of time and it is the Committee’s opinion that a major re-write is not necessary. However, some changes are required to ensure that the S&gs are up-to-date and continue to reflect best practice. So far, the S&gs for desk based assessment, field evaluation, excavation and watching briefs have been examined. More details on this process will be posted when ready.
