What is the Qualification in Archaeological Practice?
The Qualification in Archaeological Practice is a vocational qualification developed by the Archaeology Training Forum which has been approved by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. It is awarded by Education Development International (EDI), currently the awarding body for Cultural Heritage NVQs in the museums sector. The qualification is offered at levels 3 (entry level) and 4 (experienced professional) with level 5 (strategic management) in development. Each level consists of core units and a range of options.
How is it assessed?
Vocational qualifications are assessed mainly in the workplace. Candidates register with an assessment centre and, working with an assessor, submit evidence to show they have met the requirements of the core units and the options they have chosen. Prior learning can be accredited through the submission of work completed prior to registration and there is no time limit for completion.
Who can register?
The qualification is available to everyone working in archaeology, whether on a paid or a voluntary basis, or anyone seeking to develop a career in archaeology who can gather appropriate evidence.
What are the benefits?
The qualification will enable archaeologists to demonstrate that they have particular sets of skills, competencies or experience which will be of benefit when applying for jobs, promotion or membership of the IfA. It will also provide a means of accrediting informal training and on-the-job learning. All IfA training initiatives offered in the future will be structured around National Occupational Standards enabling them to contribute towards the qualification.
How much will it cost?
The fees for undertaking the Qualification through the IfA assessment centre in 2009/10 are
Level 3 £1,245.00
Level 4 £1,745.00
Fees include registration, assessment, candidates’ pack and final certification. All fees must be paid in full before the candidate can gain the award or unit certification. A small number of bursaries towards the cost of the NVQ, worth £350 each, are available to IfA members. This is a lot of money and the IfA is currently exploring mechanisms for funding candidates, particularly through the Learning and Skills Council. We will also be encouraging employers to support the qualification by contributing towards the cost.
