Description

In this one day event we provide an opportunity for delegates to learn about best practice in Equality and Diversity across the sector, to develop their ideas about what they can do in their workplaces to inspire equality, and to develop their professional networks to support these.  The event will comprise presentations, workshops and a networking lunch. It is deliberately designed to have a small ratio of speakers to delegates to ensure that all participants can engage with one another in a constructive and supportive environment which will enable the development of tangible and practical collaborative outcomes and the formation and consolidation of important professional connections. The event is sponsored by Prospect who will kindly be providing the venue as well as tea and coffee.

Agenda
10:00 Registration and refreshments
10:20 Welcome – Hannah Cobb
10:30 Decolonise Archaeology CPD Workshop - Laura Hampden and Hannah Cobb

In this session we explore what decolonising means and how decolonial and post-colonial archaeologies differ. We explore how the decolonise movement arose, and how it has impacted practice in other sectors, presenting best practice examples. Then we will work together to examine how we can decolonise heritage practice in different areas (e.g. commercial, voluntary sector, academic, community archaeology). This will be a fully participatory, active session designed to lead to concrete suggestions and next steps for us all. The E&D Group aim to produce a “Decolonise Archaeology” toolkit in 2020, and this session will not only be useful for participants to take away key ways to decolonise, but will also feed into the toolkit we produce.
12:00 Networking Lunch – and the E&D Group AGM
Please bring your own lunch
13:00 Showcasing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Archaeology and Heritage
Currently British archaeology is lucky enough to have a real groundswelling of heritage based activist organisations working for equity across the sector. This session brings together these bodies to showcase their work, to share information and best practice and to facilitate a discursive workshop about how delegates can take insights from the day back to their workplaces to inspire and lead best practice on essential equality, diversity and inclusion issues. It will comprise speakers from the CIfA E&D Group (Hannah Cobb, Laura Hampden, Penny Foreman, Cat Rees, Alex Grassam, Jim Brightman, Kevin Wooldridge, Joe Flatman), Trowelblazers (Becky Wragg Sykes), Women’s Mentoring in Archaeology and Heritage (Alex Grassam), Enabled Archaeologists (Hannah Cobb, Penny Foreman, Cat Rees), Museum Detox (Laura Hampden), BAJR Respect (Kayt Hawkins, Cat Rees), Safety in Fieldword (Dani Bradford) and representatives from Historic England (Nicola Hembrey) and Prospect (Sadie Watson, Jenny Andrews).
16:00 End of day
